Exploring Mount Tangkuban Perahu, North Bandung, West Java.


Mount of Tangkuban Perahu is one of mounts in West Java, around 20 km north of Bandung.The uniqueness of  Mount Tangkuban Perahu is its shape that resembles an upturned boat, according to the local legend which says that Tangkuban Perahu is derived from a boat that was kicked up upside down by Sangkuriang.

Mount Tangkuban Perahu or Parahu Mountain has a height of 2,084 above sea level or around 6,873 feet and is categorized as a stratovulcano. The temperature in this mountain reaches 17 degrees Celsius during the day, and can reach 2 degrees at night. The last time Mount Tangkuban Perahu erupted in 2013.

Mt Tangkuban Perahu is a popular tourist destination among locals and foreigners. It offers many interesting activities from looking down into the huge crater or more adventurously hiking down into the crater, strolling down the pine forest on its slope or  simply enjoying panoramic view surrounding the mount.

Besides,  Mt Tangkuban Perahu has three craters challenging nature lovers to go down. These craters are Kawah Ratu or " Queen Crater", Kawah Domas or "Domas Crater", and Kawah Upas or "Upas Crater".The three craters of Mount Tangkuban Perahu  produce a strong odor of sulfur or sulfur gas.

As the name implies, Kawah Ratu is the largest and largest crater in the Tangkuban Perahu Mountain area. In addition this crater is a crater that has a lot of sulfur and has the most smell of sulfur from within or around the crater. The smell of sulfur can reach a distance of several km around the foot of the mountain.

At Kawah Domas, visitors can find hot spring water at Tangkuban Perahu Volcano. With the presence of hot spring water, this crater becomes famous. Even visitors can boil eggs in this crater due to the heat of the existing water source. Of course visitors will be assisted by existing rangers and still have to be careful when around. 

Upas crater is considered a poisonous crater because the crater can remove toxic gases from it. Therefore visitors are also not allowed to be too close to the Upas Crater. Toxic or dangerous craters are usually characterized by a yellow color on the crater wall, and the absence of plants around the crater or die because of the poison. 
 

Based on the geological research , the three craters turned out to be tens of thousands of years old. The crater that first appeared after the eruption was the domas crater which was approximately 40-90 thousand years old. Then in the soil or geological movement phase, the new crater appears sequentially, the upas crater, and the last is the queen crater that is 10 thousand years old until now.
