Indonesia, or the Republic of Indonesia, with around 252 million
people, is the world's fourth country. Originally controlled by several
Hindu and Buddhist, and later by Islamic kingdoms, the archipelago
enticed European spice traders beginning in the 16th century.
By
the end of th19 century, the country still a colony of the Dutch
Administration. Nationalism grew in the early 20th century, after the
World War II marked by the unconditional surrender of Japanese to the
Allies in the Southeast Asia and the vacuum of foreign powers, this
country proclaimed its independence on Augustus 17, 1945.

The
declaration of independence was read by Soekarno, accompanied by Hatta ,
later became the first President and Vice President, at Jalan
Pegangsaan Timur 56, Jakarta. It took Indonesians four years of diplomacy and armed struggle
before their independence was formally granted by Queen Juliana of the
Netherlands.Despite the granting of independence in 1945, it wasn't until 2005,
that the Netherlands declared that they had decided to accept the date
of 17 August 1945 as the date of Indonesia’s independence.
Indonesia celebrates its Independents on August 17th annually then by holding formal and non-formal events across the archipelago. On this national holiday, formal events are being performed by every government institutions; as the pinnacle even at National Level takes place in Istana Presiden (Presidential Palace) Jakarta, provincial level in every capital city of the province,at regency level in every capital city of the regency (Kabupaten) or City (Kota), even down to village level in every village. Public and private Schools also perform flag hoisting and read out declaration of indepence throughout the country. Thus, a huge celebration takes place across the country on this patriotic day.
In addition to formal events organized by government institutions as well as schools, Indonesian people in every corner of the country also take part in the celebration by holding non-formal events. This national holiday is celebrated throughout Indonesia with parades,
community gatherings, athletic events involving adults and children such
as sack races, and a multitude of cultural and performing arts
festivals.
