Its address is at Jl. Sultan Mahmud Badarudin, 19 Ilir, Kec. Bukit Kecil, Kota Palembang, Sumatera Selatan 30113.

This museum was named after Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II to commemorate and appreciate his services. Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II reined the Palembang-Darussalam sultanate for two periods (1803-1813) and (1818-1821). He was detained and exiled to Ternate Island, North Maluku, after the defeat to the Dutch in the Palembang War ( 1819-1821).

This museum occupies an old building from the Dutch occupation in Palembang. This building was built between 1821 and 1824 and became the official residence of the Dutch resident J.L van Sevenhoven.

The residence of this resident was apparently built on the ruins of the Palembang Sultanate's palace, called Keraton Kuto Lamo. The palace was built by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I Jayo Wikramo (1724-1757). Nearly a century later, after being defeated in the Palembang War, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II was captured by the Dutch and sent to Ternate Island North Maluku, while the Kuto Kecik Palace was demolished and the materials were re-used to build the Dutch residence. Locally, the residence was known as Gedung Siput, or snail house.

Central Room, Second Floor.
The architecture of the building itself is unique because it is a combination of the Dutch colonial period and the original style of the Palembang palace. the museum exhibits various collections ranging from archeology, ethnography, biology, arts and especially numismatics, the collection of currencies. In total, this museum keeps 556 collections.
