How coffee spread around the World ?

In around 850 AD,  the coffee beans were first discovered by an goatherd, Kaldi, in Ethiopia.Then in about 1100,  coffee plants were brought by Arab traders and first time domesticated in Yemen. After around 300 years of cultivation in Arabic peninsula, Coffee made way to Mecca and became trendy there following the visit of Mufti of Aden to Ethiopia in 1454 who then adopted the use of Coffee.


In the early 1500s, the record shows Coffee houses were first founded in Mecca and Medina. Coffee drinks were used in religious gatherings. Despite the ban by the governor of Mecca from 1512 to 1524 which overruled by the Sultan of Egyph, the spread of Islam helped spread Coffee to Mediterranean, North Africa, and India. In particular, the spread by those were back from the hajj pilgrimage.

Between 1453 - 1475,  Ottoman Turks introduced Coffee to Constantinople and opened  coffee shops, called Kiva Han, and many claimed as the first in the World. At that time, coffee was an important element in Turkish culture, which was served strong, black and unfiltered. Turks like to enjoy their coffee by cooking it using Turkish-style ibrik / pots.

By 1529, a man from Wina named Frans Geog Koschitzky opened the first coffee house in Europe. In his coffee shop, Kolschitzky was the first to introduce the idea of drinking coffee using a filter and mixed with cream and sugar.

Around 1600, Baba Burdan a sufi from India, after  a hajj pilgrimage, smuggled seven coffee beans from Mecca to India. From the seedlings, coffee production had grown and spread to Eropean Colonies. Since 1690, the Dutch had became the first in transporting and processing coffee beans commercially.

Around 1800, Brazil became as the biggest coffee emporium in the World and sold coffee beans in mass.In 1830, Brazil followed by Cuba, Java, and Haiti had been the biggest coffee traders in the World with a total of production reaching 450,000 sacs per year.

In 1905, the commercial machine was first time developed in Italia.By 1995, Coffee became the most popular beverages in the World. Since 2010, Coffee shops have sprang up across big cities in Indonesia.
