Let 's Explore Danau Ranau : Exotic Tourism Destination in Southern Sumatra.


Historically, Ranau lake or Danau Ranau was formed by a huge earthquake  following the explosion of an ancient volcano, Mount Ranau, around 55 thousand years ago (www.siagabencana.com). The tectonic and volcanic activities formed a lake basin  and subsequently led to the formation of a natural lake. That explains why scientifically Ranau Lake is categorized as a tectonic volcanic lake very much like the formation of Toba Lake in North Sumatera. However, Ranau Lake with an area of 125.9 km square is ranked as the second largest lake in Sumatera after Toba Lake (1,130 km square).


Indeed, Ranau Lake is an exotic  destination of tourism to explore in Southern Sumatera. It is hidden in the Barisan Mountains of Sumatera or Bukit Barisan, stretching from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam in the northern most  to the Southern most of Sumatera Island.

Geographically, the topography of Lake Ranau is hilly with valleys, this practically makes Lake Ranau have cool weather. Administratively, two provinces: Lampung in West Lampung Regency, South Sumatera in OKU Selatan Regency share their borders in Danau Ranau.


Ranau Lake is accessible by land transportation from either three provinces in the Southern Sumatera South Sumatera, Lampung, Bengkulu. Danau Ranau is approximately 326 km away from Palembang. So, To reach the lake, it takes around nine hours.

However, from Bandar Lampung it is shorter than from Palembang only 281 km, you can arrive to the lake in about six to seven hours. So far, if you are in Bengkulu, the best route you can take is by land travel through mana and Krui , and then to Liwa in West Lampung before crossing province border to arrive in Danau Ranau at Kota Batu.


From Bandar Lampung, Lampung you can also take air travel first to Krui for about one hour. The travel takes around two hours to the lake as there is an airport in Krui, Pesisir Barat Regency called Bandara M Taufik Kiemas  officially in operation since February 7th 2020 but the rest needs to continue with land travel for about one hour too. The flight from Bandar Lampung to Krui on Thurday once  a week is by Wings Air.

The main attraction when visiting Danau Ranau is the spectacular view of the lake with Mt Seminung standing as the background. The lake is such a wonderful place because the blue color of the water  tempting visitors to instantly swim and have a bath while at the same time it also offers a green panorama of highlands surrounding the lake including Mount Seminung with a height of 1880 m , the highest land here. The ambience of this view is such a instagrammable spot to go by.


There are many other attractions you can enjoy while you are here like in Marissa Island, Waterfall at Subik Tuha, Pelangi Beach, hotspring water at the foot of Mt Seminung, and Ranau Rafting at Mekakau Ilir.

Tourist facilities on Lake Ranau are also fairly complete; you will find waterboom, Jetski facilities, restaurants, toilets, prayer rooms, accommodations, and other supporting facilities.During the weekend, quite many visitors come from local area, domestic and foreign countries to enjoy the charm of Danau Ranau.

Marisa Island
Marisa Island is the only island in the middle of Lake Ranau.The island still has pristine forests and coconuts that visitors often pick when visiting the island. You can find hotspring water in the island that many believe it can cure skin disease. To reach the location, visitors need to use the Lake Ranau waterway by driving a motor boat with a distance of  around 40 minutes to one hour. Visitors can rent motorboat available on the bank of the lake. 


Pelangi Beach
Rainbow Beach is a favorite tourist destination on Lake Ranau Tourism.Even though it is only around two years old, this artificial beach with a length of less than 1 kilometer is a family recreation site when visiting Lake Ranau. This place is a suitable location for tourists to enjoy the view of Lake Ranau and Mount Seminung and the waves on the beach.This location is also equipped with Jetsky rides and Banana Boat, as well as equipment for swimming at Pelana Beach, Lake Ranau.

Historical Buildings and Sites in Jakarta: Menara Syahbandar.

Syahbandar Menara Jakarta was built around 1839 and previously called Uitkijk or Uitkijk Post, once the watchtower for vessels entering and leaving Batavia and as a tax collector's office for goods unloaded at the port of Sunda Kelapa. Its function as a control tower terminated after 1886, when the port of Tanjung Priok was opened. The tower  actually occupies the former bastion (camp) Culemborg. The bastion was made of rock in 1645, the fortifications, part of the wall around the city of Batavia to care for the mouth of the Ciliwung River, Warehouse pepper, and Shipyard. The building of Syahbandar Tower has a dimension of 4 x 8 meters high and 12 meters. Jakarta Syahbandar tower has three rooms, namely on the ground floor, in the central part measuring 6 × 7 meters, and the top which serves as a viewing room with four windows.
