Yesterday I received an email from a friend of mine, Aisyah Mulyawati, a Journalist living in Kota Bekasi. She sent me a draft of an article to upload in my blog. The Article was on the activity of Quilt works initiated by women organization in Kota Bekasi. Her writings reminded me of my father background originating West Lampung where traditional quilting works also has taken places for probably hundred years. I recalled also in my father' house a number of handicrafts, called Celugam cloths from Kampong where my late father coming from, Liwa.
From economy perspective, the writing was acceptable but I preferred to develop the idea into my own view introducing Celugam as a culture heritage in my own blog. The Celugam cloth typical of West Lampung is becoming known at the national and even international levels. Traditional cloth with celugam motifs has become an icon of the Sekala Beghak Land which has long been known and used for generations by the people of West Lampung, especially since the founding of the Sekala Beghak kingdom. The land belongs to my ancestors.
At that time, Celugam was used to cover the front of the mattress, also known as Pudak Palsu. Since usually the throne or seat of the Sekala Beghak kingdom is a pile of mattresses, the front side is then covered with Celugam. This is the traditional function of Celugam.
Celugam as a cultural heritage of West Lampung is unique in shape and structure making it interesting and so esthetics. Celugam also consists of a number of colors such as red, black, white, and orange. by using patchwork techniques triangular pieces of cloth with different colors are sewn to make a variety of handicrafts. In the past, the Celugam was made for cloths only used for traditional events, but now it is applied in various contemporary products such as handbag, table cloth, pillow etc. Take a look at an example of table cloths in the following video.
