As the host of the Asian Games, Palembang has legendary culinary offerings such as pempek and on the tourist side, Palembang also has a tourist icon, the Ampera Bridge. However, apart from these two icons. Palembang also has another tourist icon, namely the Belido Fish Monument.
This Belido Fish Monument is one of the newest landmarks in Palembang, South Sumatra. Belido, a type of freshwater belida fish, has a thick texture, therefore, this fish used to be used as an ingredient in making pempek. It is a genus of fish of Notopteridae family. They are commonly known as the Asian knifefishes or featherback. Native to freshwater in Southeast Asia.
In Indonesia, it can be found in Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Malay peninsula. The Belida name was taken from one of the river in South Sumatra. Once raw material for very popolair crackers of Palembang known as Kemplang and also Pempek but it has been replaced by mackerel fish.
Belida fish is considered critically endangered because its utilization exceeds the limit of reproductive ability which causes the population to decrease drastically. Therefore, the Belido Fish Monument was created to commemorate the history of the fish.Built by an artist from Boyolai, Central Java, this Belido Fish Monument sits on the banks of the Musi River, in front of Benteng Kuto Besak (BKB), with a fountain coming out of its mouth.
