Visit Puro Pakualaman in DI Yogjakarta.

Historically and politically, DI Jogyakarta is the amalgamation of Jogyakarta Sultanate and the Dutchy Paku Alaman. Since the proclamation of Indonesia Independence, both the former Mataram Sultanate declared as part of Republic Indonesia and given a status of Special Territory (Daerah Istimewa,DI) of Jogyakarta with Jogjakarta Sultan as the Governor and the Duke Sri Paku Alam as the Vice Governor. Thus in Jogyakarta, besides Keraton Ngayogyakarta as the center of governance for Jogyakarta Sultanate ,  the Dutchy Paku Alaman has Puro Pakualaman.

Along with Surakarta, Jogjakarta is the center of Javanese culture. So when you are in Jogjakarta, you will not have a complete picture by visiting only  the palace of Javanese Sultanate, Keraton Ngayogyakarta. In fact, you need to attend also Puro Pakualaman to learn Javanese culture. Both Palaces are dedicated as the central of the Javanese fine art and culture which are sacred and high culture.

Compared to Keraton Ngayoyakarta, Puro Pakualaman is smaller. Facing south, this small palace complex consists of a series of unified buildings surrounded by a 5.4 hectare wall. Because Puro Pakualaman is the center of government, there is a small square called swandanan in front of the palace, the Great Mosque of Pakualaman to the southwest of Paku Alaman, and market. In addition, there are also settlements for residents, servicemen (abdi dalem), and other facilities.

Like a royal palace, there is a banyan tree in the square called Sewandana in front of Puro Pakualaman. If you go inside, there is the main gate of Regol Danawara which was built in 1884. Inside the Puro Pakualaman complex, there are core buildings that currently function for ceremonial events as well as supporting facilities for the daily life of the Duke Sri Paku Alam and his family. The buildings include the Sewatama Ward, Dalem Ageng Prabasuyasa, Sewarengga Ward, Gedhong Maerakaca, Parangkarsa Ward, and Gedhong Purwaretna.

Currently, the Pakualaman Palace is used as the residence of Sri Paduka Paku Alam IX.The buildings above used to have their respective functions. Sewarengga ward , for example, is a place where  the Duke Sri Paku Alam assigns tasks to his employees.Saat ini, Keraton Pakualaman digunakan sebagai tempat tinggal Sri Paduka Paku Alam IX yang juga menjabat sebagai Wakil Gubernur Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta It serves as a waiting room. There is also the Parangkarsa Ward which is used as a place to prepare for the wedding of Paku Alam's sons and daughters and a place to stay for state guests who come to Puro Pakualaman.

 The Gate into Museum.

In Puro, there is also a museum that you can visit. The history or heritage left by Pakualaman is in the museum near Puro Pakualaman which you can see if you visit Puro Pakualaman. The objects that he collects are translations of political agreements that became the basis for the founding of the Paku Alaman Duchy and also various other political agreements. In this museum there are also several royal heirlooms including the throne of KGPA Paku Alam I, the oversized umbrella "Songsong Bharad", then "Songsong Tunggul Naga", a trident spear weapon, oversized clothes, then a horse-drawn carriage which is a vehicle belonging to the Duke of Paku Alam.
