Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU) is back on its feet after being hit hard by the pandemic. The moment of revival was marked by the Udjo Reborn performance on Saturday, 30 July 2022 evening.

In fact, one of the mainstays of educational tours in West Java, this was quite adrift during the pandemic. Even though they had been selling show tickets virtually, the threat of permanent closing of SAU had become a hot issue.

In his remarks, the leader of SAU, Taufik Hidayat Udjo also stated the downturn he had experienced during the pandemic. Prapandemi, SAU used to receive nearly 2,000 guests and perform more than 3 shows per day.

"We were before Covid (receiving) nearly two thousand people per day. But during Covid, two people a day were also difficult. So, we really had to fast. We thought about how this would be the fate of our friends (SAU employees)," said Taufik at Saung Angklung Udjo, Jalan Padasuka 118, Kec. Cibeunying Kidul, Bandung City on Saturday (30/7/2022).

Deputy Public Relations (PR) of Saung Angklung Udjo, Robby Murfi (30) said that SAU had been widely reported that it was almost closed. However, in the last two months, requests for performances at SAU have become increasingly widespread. By declaring Udjo Reborn, Robby believes SAU is ready to meet the various needs of culture, tourism and the arts of West Java.

"We want to prove that with the enthusiasm and support of various Saung Angklung Udjo partnerships during the pandemic, Saung Angklung Udjo can survive not falling too deep, not completely closing," Robby said to detikJabar. The launching of Udjo Reborn, a sign of the revival of Saung Angklung Udjo.

Robby also stated that Udjo Reborn and several new products from SAU had been formed and packaged nicely to meet new market conditions. Cooperation with the government, various associations, as well as tourism and cultural ecosystems was formed to maintain the cultural education program a la Saung Angklung Udjo.

Regular shows that have been the soul of SAU since time immemorial, are now given a new concept. One of the results of this renewal product is the Rehe Mask. The product features dance and witty dialogue to invite the audience's laughter.

Until now, SAU still needs to discuss further regarding SAU's entrance ticket prices in the future. Through the launch of this program and other discussions with various parties, SAU hopes for consultations from various sides of the Indonesian tourism ecosystem, especially West Java. After the deliberation yields results, only then will SAU determine the HTM.

It turns out that the decline in tourism numbers during the pandemic is not the only problem SAU is facing. Apart from the lack of tourists, Robby said that there is an obstacle in the form of changes in consumer behavior which are increasingly turning to the use of gadgets.

"The obstacle faced by me besides the pandemic is behavior change. For communication media channels in a performance at this time, it's not only live (offline), but also from YouTube channels. That's our attitude that must change if we don't want to die," said Robby.

In the future, SAU has also prepared technology to support hybrid activities. One of the efforts is to develop SAU in the metaverse. One that SAU is trying to successfully hook up for this development is Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina's RANS Entertainment.

"For hybrids, we will develop one of them with the metaverse. Later there will be a cultural corner in the metaverse, so there will be Saung Angklung Udjo later when he enters the metaverse there," said the 30-year-old man.

Being one of those responsible for these tourist and educational sites, Robby also gave a message to West Java residents regarding SAU and the preservation of the angklung musical instrument culture.

"Udjo has always positioned himself with our creativity which will entertain and educate. What I can say is I can only quote from Soekarno, a country that does not know its culture is like someone who does not know who he is," concluded Robby.
