Does Indonesia experince "Heatwave" like South Asia Countries?

Bukit Barisan in Seluma Regency, Bengkulu.

Since last week until today, most of the countries in South Asia are still affected by the heat wave or "heatwave". The Meteorological Agency in Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, China, Thailand and Laos have reported hot temperatures of more than 40°C which have lasted for the past few days with new maximum temperature records in their region.

In Indonesia, many people have complained about the weather in some parts which tends to be hotter than usual. What caused it?

According to a press release by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the hot weather that has occurred in Indonesia recently is not included in the category of heat waves because it does not meet these conditions.

In Indonesia, the daily maximum temperature was recorded at 37.2°C at the BMKG observation station in Ciputat last week, although in general the highest temperature recorded in several locations is in the range of 34°C - 36°C so far.

In terms of the characteristics of the phenomenon, the hot temperature that occurs in the territory of Indonesia is a phenomenon resulting from the apparent motion of the sun which is a cycle that usually occurs every year.

That's why the potential for hot air temperatures like this can also be repeated at the same period when the apparent movement of the sun occurs every year. The following are five causes of hot weather in Indonesia according to the BMKG:

  • There are unusual atmospheric dynamics throughout the Asian region, including Indonesia.
  • There is an apparent movement of the sun that occurs every year which adds to the surge in heat in the sub-continent of South Asia, the Indochina region and East Asia in 2023.
  • The trend of global warming and climate change is causing heat waves to occur more frequently.
  •  The dominance of the Australian monsoon, in which Indonesia enters the dry season.
  •  There is maximum intensity of solar radiation in clear weather conditions and lack of cloud cover.
