The kingdoms of the archipelago left historical records such as inscriptions and other objects. Even some kingdoms still have palaces that still exist today.Of the many kingdoms in the archipelago, the kingdoms on the tip of Sumatra to Sulawesi seem to have left imposing imprints that are still solid, namely palace buildings.


The following are some of the archipelago's royal palaces that still exist today, quoted from the respective official websites of the regional and provincial governments.

1. Palace of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate
The building which is often referred to as the palace was founded by Prince Mangkubumi or Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in 1775.

The palace is the place where the queens live, derived from the words ka + queen + an = palace. Sometimes it is also called a kadaton, namely ke + datu + an = kedaton, where the datu or queens are.

If in Indonesian it means palace. So a palace is a palace, but a palace is not a palace. Kraton is a palace that contains religious meaning, philosophical meaning and cultural meaning (culture).

2. Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace
The Surakarta Kasunanan Palace was founded by Susuhunan Pakubuwono II (Sunan PB II) in 1744 as a replacement for the Kartasura Palace which was damaged by the Chinatown commotion in 1743.One of the interesting multi-storey buildings in the Kasunanan Palace is the Sangga Buwana Tower which has a height of 30 meters.This tower was founded by Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono III in 1782 as well as a place to spy on the Dutch during the colonial period.


3. Sumenep Palace

The Sumenep Palace is the legacy of the Sumenep kings who once ruled. The Sumenep Palace was built by Lauw Piango, a Chinese national. The concept of the palace building is somewhat unique because it uses a blend of Javanese, Arabic, Chinese and European styles in its design.Currently, part of the palace functions as a museum, while parts of the pavilion are often used as a venue for government events and art and cultural performances.


4. Maimun Palace
Maimun Palace is the palace of the Kingdom of Deli which was built by its king named Sultan Maimun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah. The architect came from Italy and the architecture is a blend of Malay (Islamic), Spanish, Indian and Italian styles. The color of this palace is yellow, typical of Malay. Currently, the Maimun Palace is no longer used as the sultan's residence but has turned into a tourist spot where the public can see the legacy of the Maimun Sultanate.

5. Palace of Sekala Brak Lampung
Lampung has the Sekala Brak Kingdom whose palace is called Lamban Gedung. Lamban Gedung is in the form of a stage so one has to climb the stairs to enter.

6. Alwatzikhoebillah Sambas Palace
The Kingdom of Sambas is one of the kingdoms in West Kalimantan. This kingdom has a palace called the Alwatzikhoebillah Palace which is located on the edge of the confluence of the Subah River, the Small Sambas River, and the Teberau River.

7. Tidore Palace
The Tidore Sultanate Palace or Kedaton Kie is located in a hilly area directly facing the sea. Kedaton Kie was founded during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Tidore in 1810.In 1912, there was an internal royal conflict which resulted in Kedaton Kie being completely destroyed. Currently, Kedaton Kie has been reconstructed in a shape adapted to the conditions of the Kedaton before it was damaged.

8. The Palace of the Sultanate of Ternate
The Palace of the Sultanate of Ternate is a palace belonging to the Sultanate of Ternate whose origins began in 1257. This palace is quite large, with the backdrop of Mount Gamalama, and the main square and beach in front of it.Now, the Ternate Sultanate Palace is now a valuable cultural asset under the management of the Ternate City Culture and Tourism Office.
