Indonesia is a diverse country with a rich culinary heritage. There are many popular dishes that reflect the various regions, cultures, and influences of this archipelago nation. Some of the most popular Indonesian dishes are:

 

Nasi goreng

This is often referred to as the Indonesian version of fried rice. It is usually eaten for breakfast and made with leftover rice from the previous day. The rice is stir-fried with shrimp paste, shallots, garlic, kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), hot peppers, and eggs. It can also include other ingredients such as chicken, seafood, vegetables, or tofu.

This is a dish of skewered and grilled meat, usually served with a peanut sauce. The meat can be chicken, beef, lamb, goat, or pork. The skewers are often made from bamboo or coconut palm fronds. Satay is a popular street food in Indonesia and can be found throughout the country.

This is a spicy and aromatic dish of meat cooked in coconut milk and spices for several hours until it becomes tender and dry. The spices include ginger, galangal, turmeric, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, chilies, and kaffir lime leaves. Rendang originated from the Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra and is considered the most delicious dishes in the world as found by CNN.

 

Soto

Soto is  a soup of meat and vegetables in a clear or cloudy broth. Soto is available in many of so many regional variations,  but some of the common ingredients are chicken, beef, mutton, offal, noodles, rice cakes, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, celery, lemongrass, lime leaves, and fried shallots. Soto is usually served with sambal (chili sauce), lime juice, and crackers.

This is a salad of boiled vegetables, tofu, tempeh (fermented soybean cake), hard-boiled eggs, and crackers, tossed with a peanut dressing. The vegetables can include cabbage, spinach, bean sprouts, cucumber, carrot, potato, and green beans. Gado-gado is a popular vegetarian dish in Indonesia and can be served as a main course or a side dish.
